Award in Administrative Law

Course Objective

Throughout this study programme, participants will have the opportunity to study the workings of government agencies and their functions as regulated by law.

Participants will study governmental institutions of the modern nation state, the powers attributed to such institutions, and the manner and limits within which they can be exercised. Comparative studies will be discussed and encouraged.

This unit shall also cover the concept of the judicial review of administrative actions under Maltese law, which deals with various issues ranging from the exercise of ultra vires powers, to action in relation to public offices and service. Participants will also draw comparisons with congruent foreign actions, particularly with relation to other similarly modern democratic societies.

Anyone interested to understand Administrative Law, Public Service and Public Sector employees,  In-house lawyers, lawyers working in private practice, law students.

Learning Outcomes

• Clearly comprehend instructions regarding what sort of research or work would be necessary for them to carry out;
• Compile findings and conclusions in a clear and concise manner which can be easily comprehended by their superiors;
• Explain with clarity and attention to detail findings and conclusions orally if so required, and express these in a professional and agreeable manner
• Conduct independent research on law, jurisprudence, and other sources as required;
• Understand the wording of Maltese (and foreign) legislation and be able to apply jurisprudential interpretation thereto;
• Recognise issues which arise at law;
• Advance knowledge further in an independent manner.

Entry Requirements

2 Advanced level subjects at Grade C or better, and 3 Intermediate level subjects at Grade C or better. 1 of any of these subjects must be Maltese or English

3 Advanced level subjects at Grade C or better

OR Mature/Adult Learning Student (must be 23 when course starts) subject to an interview by the Head of the Academy.
