Course Objective

The Undergraduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety provides a professional introductory program of study. The overall goal of the study programme is to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to identify workplace hazards, assess risks, and develop effective strategies for
preventing accidents, injuries, and illnesses in various industries and occupations.

It may also be a pathway for the higher-level degrees such as Bachelor in Occupational Health and Safety. This Occupational Health and Safety
programme has been developed in conjunction with industry needs to address the complex nature of occupational health and safety at the workplace. The
specialised knowledge and skills developed throughout the course will allow participants to confidently address the complex nature of workplace issues.

It also addresses the knowledge vacuum to those individuals who are assigned to undertake the role of a supervisor or the equivalent in the construction
industry.

Learning Outcomes

  • Interpret the nature of organisations and management theories in the context of the management and promotion of health and safety at work
  • Identify the different types of workplace hazards, such as physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, and psychosocial hazards.
  • Draw audits and perform inspections
  • Apply control measures to identified job hazards
  • Design in carrying out risk assessments
  • Carry out risk assessment for construction activities
  • Identify causes of accidents and recommend preventive measures
  • Formulate the elements of a health and safety management system and understand their role in monitoring health and safety standards on site.

Entry Requirements

2 Advanced level subjects at Grade C or better, and 3 Intermediate level subjects at Grade C or better. 1 of any of these subjects must be Maltese or English

3 Advanced level subjects at Grade C or better

OR Mature/Adult Learning Student (must be 23 when course starts) subject to an interview by the Head of the Academy.
